What I think is missing is the fact that we have allies as well. The French were there for us when we fought for our independence. Shortly after 6 pm on April 4th, 1968, Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. At the time, King was at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee . As he was standing on the balcony of his hotel room, he was struck in the head by a sniper. The assassin was none other than a man known as James Earl Ray. One of the events of University’s history that I found very fascinating is how Roosevelt University practiced non-discrimination in admissions for its students and faculty members since 1946. The University was recognized nation-wide in press coverage for taking small steps towards creating an academic environment where students and staff members were selected based on their knowledge and passion, rather than their race or gender. In the article, “The Truth about ‘holistic College Admissions”, Sara Harberson expresses how universities that are not allowed to use racial preferences on college admissions, are still devising strategies to work around the laws to produce the same result. Harberson states how the institutions are using what is called “holistic admissions”, which allows a college to factor in a student's background, race and income. By filtering out the minority groups, they are creating a less-diverse community, preventing students of certain backgrounds from a proper education, and taking away opportunities from students based on their ethnicity. Racial discrimination is when a person is treated less favorably than another person in a similar situation because of their race, colour, descent, national or ethnic origin or immigrant status. After a troublesome and torrid time, the black people or what so called slaves, were entering the 20th century with hope of not being discriminated after the slavery had been abolished in the late 19th century. The beginning of 20th century had overseen the stampede of worldwide immigrants to America as they seek for a better life. As for African-Americans, they were entering the phase where they found themselves almost identical with the past century despite the slavery being abolished. Though the abolishment of slavery was written in the 13th Amendment, some of the states still legalized it. They were still in the same position as they were before in some of the states in America.
