From 2008 to 2013 Ray Rice appeared in 92 games in the National Football League (NFL) playing for the Baltimore Ravens. Rice is ranked as the Raven’s second all-time leading rusher behind Jamal Lewis (7,801) with 5,940 yards, and is also second in rushing attempts (1,273) and rushing touchdowns (37) and third combined touchdowns (43). On February 15, 2014 news broke out to the media and had almost everyone’s attention seeing one of the top 5 running backs in the NFL being arrested. Rice was charged and released from jail on assault charges along with his fiancée/wife Janay Rice. There wasn’t much evidence about what had happened between the two but it was said that the two had gotten into an altercation in Atlantic City. The incident was described as a “minor physical altercation”. Hearing that it seems a little fishy because first off what exactly is a minor physical altercation and how can one get off so easily with assault? These are just few of the many questions being asked during this whole scandal going on. What is assault? Assault is an intentional tort that often arises in the context of sport violence. In Assault there is no contact involved in this tort. Three elements must be established by a plaintiff to plead a successful cause of action. The three elements are intent to cause immediate harm, apprehension of immediate harm by the plaintiff, and lack of consent. Knowing the fact of what had happened between the two the coach insisted that Rice was going to come back and play even with a domestic violence arrest. Harbaugh believes that the two have some issues that they have to handle and work through and that they should get some counseling for the situation they are dealing with. Ozzie Newsome the general manager for the Ravens said after seeing the video that has been released stated “we will allow the league to take its position before we have to take any”.
