Sometimes in life you face problems such as making friends. Friendship has a very important role in the short story “Raymond's Run” By Toni Cade Bambara. In “Raymond’s Run”, Squeaky is a girl who is impolite, and selfish. This causes Squeaky to be lacking friends. At the end, Squeaky learns that you have to let your guard down to make friends.
In the beginning of “Raymond's Run”, Squeaky was overconfident and rude. She only managed to get herself in more bad situations, such as fights. One reason Squeaky was overconfident and rude was when on page 1 she said, “I must rather knock you down and take my chances.” This shows why Squeaky is so confident, that she thinks she is the best. This also shows how Squeaky wants people to know that they shouldn’t mess with her. Another reason for how Squeaky is overconfident and rude is when she says, “And as anybody can tell you, I’m the fastest thing on two feet.” (page 1). This causes Squeaky to notice how Raymond has his own passion for running. One example is when Squeaky says, “...Raymond is on the other side of the fence, bending down with his fingers on the grass just like he knew what he was doing.” (Page 5). This shows how Squeaky thinks Raymond would make a good runner. This also shows why Squeaky can take care of her brother. My second reason is when Squeaky says, “ I almost stop to watch my brother Raymond on his first run.” (Page 5). This shows how Squeaky is surprised to see Raymond on his first ever run. This also shows why Squeaky is interested in her brother on his first run. My last reason is when Squeaky started to not care if she lost the race or not, because Raymond was running next to her.
