Many characters have their own way of thought, which can make some of them hard to love, if at all. In the story Raymond’s Run, by Toni Bambara, The Protagonist, Squeaky, has to look after her brother, which due to his disease, is much more difficult than it sounds. The character Squeaky is hard to love becuase of her view on life, the fact that she’s always looking for a fight, and because of her narcissism.

The first reason squeaky is hard to love is because of her outlook on life. People that she barely even knows the names of, she’ll instantly think of them as “stupid,” or a “fool.” Like how Mary Louise is “ungrateful,” or “Rosie is too stupid to see the resemblance between her and Raymond.” squeaky doesn't give anyone a chance to talk to Raymond, but her job is to keep raymond safe and clean, so Squeaky tries to protect raymond from everything, thinking that everyone is cruel and just trying to hurt them. Because of this view of a person, Squeaky dosn’t act kind to anyone, or even think kindly about anyone. This is proven throughout many parts of the story where Squeaky says that she’s always ready to fight anyone, even that she’d much rather “knock you down than talk.” At the beginning of the story, she says that if anyone had anything to say to her brother, they would have to get through her first. Another example is when squeaky comes across some girls that she knows. They try to ask what grade Raymond is in and Squeaky steps in front of him and says “If you have something to say to my brother, you say it to me.” This attitude toward anyone is practically asking for a fight, which is hard to
