Authors use many tools to describe and reveal aspects of a character in novels and short stories. In the short story, “Raymond's run,” the author, Toni Cade Bambara, use Dialogue to tell the reader about the main character Squeaky. Squeaky is a complex character. She is very determined about her running, and is very protective of her brother, Raymond. The author uses dialogue to reveal that Squeaky has the Character traits of determination, and protectiveness. In the book Raymond’s Run, Squeaky is very determined about her running. She practices her breathing while walking down Broadway with her brother, Raymond. During their walks she slowly breathes in and breathes out to the count of seven which she considers to be her lucky number. “...as long as he doesn't interrupt my breathing exercises, which I have to do on account of if I’m serious about running.” In this quote she literally says that she is serious, or determined about running. From the very beginning of the story, it is obvious that Squeaky not only "minds" her brother, she is his protector. Whenever she is training or practicing her breathing exercises, she is always sure to keep Raymond on the inside of the sidewalk, never close to the street. This way, he won't run into the street or splash in puddles, getting himself wet and dirty. Squeaky has no problem standing up for her brother. When Gretchen and her crew tries to start trouble with Raymond, Squeaky is quick to tell them; "You got anything to say to my brother you say it to me..." This quote shows that Squeaky is willing to protect her brother. Also, Squeaky is known to say “...if anybody has anything to say to Raymond, anything to say about his big head, they have to come by me... I much rather just knock you down and take my chances…” This shows that Squeaky is not only caring and protective towards Raymond, but would fight anybody if they dared mess with
