From the end of the first fight to happen someone was thinking how to be better. Ever since the first wars, people contemplated on what they could of done to win or win faster. As time has progressed weapons went from being yielded of stone and wood to death dealers made of metal and intricate and complicated wire systems and technology exceeding imaginations. Today, one of the world leaders in this type of technology and weaponry is a company that now operates under the name Raytheon. The company is considered to be one of the earliest technology start-ups; it began in Cambridge Massachusetts as the American Appliance Company on the 7th of July 1922. The company had early and humble beginnings. During WWII the company was “responsible for supplying nearly 80 percent of the magnetron tubes used in radars for U.S. and British forces.” Additionally, they “developed parts for proximity fuses used in antiaircraft shells.” Afterward, the company moved to civilian markets where their most notable contribution was the microwave. During the 1940’s Raytheon and its employees were responsible for production of the Sea Going, or SG, search radar for naval ships that provided essential information in regards to situational awareness. This radar propelled allied forces to victory in major skirmishes such as The Battle of the Atlantic. Moving forward, during the 1950’s and 1960’s, Raytheon Co. produced the first missile to displace a moving object from the air. Known as the Lark missile, this was the first missile mounted guidance system to perform such a task and paved the way for others like it such as the sparrow and Hawk missiles. To top this spectacular feat, the company then played nothing less than a fundamental and vital role in the astrophysical landing on the moon. The company was responsible for building the computer that was used to guide the space craft. Additionally, they provided the “on-board microwave tube that was capable of transmit[ing] radio and TV signals to earth.” This Computer became known as the most reliable digital computer of its time. Raytheon did not stop there. Their contributions continued to raise the bar for industry competitors. During the Vietnam era Raytheon continued to produce weapons necessary for military advancement. The Raytheon Co. delivered to the military an anti-tank missile and the AIM 7F-Sparrow missile for fighter aircraft. Approaching more modern times, Raytheon was quick to adapt and
