I need to read the book ‘The Shipping News’ by Annie Proulx for school. The book has 335 pages, and I need to write a reading diary. I’ll write something for approximately every few chapters (30-50 pages). This is all rewritten on the computer, because I wrote it in the first instance in my notebook and on some loose papers, but I’m not a sadist and would never hand in such a diary to my teacher or do something like that.

The book starts with the life story of someone called Quoyle. In 28 pages, 36 years of Quoyle have been summarized. To be honest, I find it pretty hard to read. Sometimes I don’t understand something, or I don’t realize what’s written, so I had to reread some parts. The narrator describes Quoyle as a fat ugly man, who’s considered as a failure. His family called him names, he’s very lonesome; he had a tough life. The only friend he got are Partridge and Mercalia, Partridge’s fiancée (they’re both black). Partridge got Quoyle a job as a journalist. Quoyle can pretty much do nothing , but he likes his job. His boss, Ed Punch, keeps firing and rehiring him. Partridge and Mercalia went to life in California, so Quoyle is now left alone. (Mercalia is the first black woman truck driver). Quoyle meets a woman …show more content…

She’s supporting children with the down syndrome and is trying to do everything to give Herry a happy life. Quoyle shall bring her twice a week to the library for books for Herry. Quoyle becomes happy because he gets to see her more often. I really think that he loves her. Quoyle was at Wavey to drink tea with his daughters. Bunny sees a white dog again, but this dog is made out of wood. Quoyle brings them back, because he doesn’t want to Wavey and Herry to see Bunny imagining stuff.
