Week 3 Reading Journal:Bud, Not Buddy

Introduction:
I am reading this book called Bud, Not Buddy by Christopher Paul Curtis from chapter 9 to 11. Bud finds himself in the company of a jazz band called the Dusky Devastators of the Depression, led by Herman E. Calloway, who he believes is his father. The band initially does not believe him, but he eventually convinces them that he is related to Calloway by showing them a flyer with Calloway's picture and the name of his band. Bud is welcomed into the band and enjoys their music and company. However, he feels a sense of loneliness and homesickness, missing his deceased mother and wishing for a family of his own. Similarly, in "The Pursuit of Happyness," the main character Chris Gardner (played by Will Smith) finds himself homeless and without any source of income, forcing him and his son to spend nights in shelters or public restrooms. Chapter 10 of Bud, Not Buddy sees Bud being taken in by Lefty Lewis, who helps him get a job and earn money. Both Bud, Not Buddy and The Pursuit of Happyness highlight the struggles and obstacles faced by individuals trying to make a better life for themselves, and how their determination and resilience can help them overcome these …show more content…

Answers:
"Rules and Things" is the title of Chapter 9. It refers to a list of rules and instructions that Bud's mother wrote down for him to follow in case he ever needed to leave home and find his father. The "Rules and Things" are a set of guidelines that are meant to help Bud navigate the challenges he may face on his journey, including taking care of himself, staying out of trouble, and being persistent in his search.
While Bud does form a bond with Herman and the other members of the band, it's possible that his relationship with Lefty may become even closer. Lefty is portrayed as a kind and compassionate character, who takes Bud under his wing and helps him to adjust to life on the road. Lefty is also a musician, and his love for music and his willingness to share it with Bud suggests that he may become an important mentor and friend to Bud.
I think that Bud's future will affect this future because now that an orphan and never got to meet his dad, I think Bud's future will be affected.
Yes, because now that he is reunited with his grandfather he might tell stories about his dad and mom. I also think that the band might tell stories about Bud’s mom and dad because they used to be in the same jazz band
