At the beginning of the story, she declares her love for Melville. This displays how she was unaware of the scheme he was involved in, and it came as a shock to Eliza in the book, causing the reader to feel the surprise as well since the book is written from her perspective. Eliza’s realization and the scene where Melville’s betrayal is revealed are very close together, so the reader goes on an emotional roller coaster. The elaboration on how Eliza fell for Melville takes up a great portion of the book, so the reality that it was all a lie takes all of that and causes the reader to wonder what would have happened if the main character knew. extra 6/5/2024 “A Lady’s Guide to Scandal” by Sophie Irwin.
