Reading Response Summary: The book “Sense and Sensibility” is a fictional classic novel by Jane Austen written in the perspective of third person omniscient. This book was published in 1811 during the Romantic era. Jane Austen wrote this book to protest against the idea of romanticism, which is valuing emotion excessively over logic. In the beginning of the story, the members of the Dashwood family were introduced. Firstly, the house owner Mr. Henry Dashwood had two wives. The first wife left him with a son named John and with his second wife, Mrs. Dashwood, they had three daughters named Elinor, Marianne, and Margaret. So far, I’ve read one-third of the book and I’ve really enjoyed it. Firstly, I really like the author’s writing style because the story is very organized, easy to comprehend, and she included many descriptive words. To explain, the story starts off with background information regarding the main characters’ family and explained the relationship between the members. For example, the first sentence was, “The family of Dashwood had been long settled in Sussex.” It introduced the Dashwood family and transitioned to the main characters, Elinor Dashwood and her sister Marianne Dashwood. Overall, Jane Austen organized her ideas in chronological order which made the plot really easy to comprehend. However, in the book, Jane Austen did not use as many literary devices, but she did use some figurative language. For example, on page 7, the author was describing Marianne’s personality, “She was sensible and clever; but eager in everything; her sorrows, her joys, could have no moderation.” Overall, I really like Jane Austen’s writing style because her ideas are organized, easy to understand and she used a lot descriptive words throughout the
