Clothing has changed very much over the years. At the time of the Civil War, ready-made clothing was very limited. Clothes were made by a tailor, a family member, or an individual. Ready-made clothing had many relationships with the development of tailoring in that they were both made by hand and they were not convenient. Both tailoring and ready-made apparel were made by hand. Clothes were made by hand using different techniques. For example, as stated by the text titled “Tailoring” in Source #2, “Polynesians spent hours beating plant fibers and tree bark into tapa clothes.” Using their methods, a tailor had to make the fabrics manually. According to Source #2, “[Tailors] made ... clothing by hand from fabric they made or purchased locally.”
