1. Identification and evaluation of sources This investigation, examining certain events of the Cold War, will answer the question: To what extent did President Ronald Reagan’s actions aid in the end of the Cold War? The Cold War was a war between the United States and the Soviet Union that took place from 1947 to 1991. During that time several United States presidents took office, one of the last being Ronald Reagan whose actions have been argued to have been more influential than the rest and impactful toward the downfall of the ongoing war with the Soviet Union.
Presidential Power Ronald Reagan served as America’s 40th president. Reagan managed to cut taxes, increase defense spending, negotiate a nuclear arms reduction agreement with the Soviets and is credited with helping to bring a quicker end to the Cold War. I think that president Reagan used his presidential powers properly in order to achieve what needed to be done. Ronald Reagan was president as the Cold War was raging worse than it had ever before. Reagan used his executive power, Commander in Chief, to put up resistance against Mikhail Gorbachev and push his defensive strategy.

He came up with a strategy called the Reagan Doctrine, whose aim was to contain the global influence of the Soviet Union and to end the Cold War. It also tried to prevent any more expansions the USSR might make throughout the world. However, there were many instances in which the Cold War may have turned into a real war.

After the first world war the Soviets quickly made moves against their previous allies in not leaving eastern Europe sparking a cold war like never seen before. This caused great fear and panic among the American populace, but Reagan shows that he is standing just as firm in opposing the Soviets as they do him. This is required because the citizens need a constant point to focus their hopes and loyalty on. A strong leader in the form of Reagan is exactly what they needed, a reaffirmation that their opposition to communism is not lost. A strong president is always aspired after, and few foot the bill, but the U.S hopes that among the many one will step forward and lead us through any tough times we may face.
Ronald Reagan’s presidencies are commonly referred to as “The Reagan Era,” which was full of ups and downs. He was strongly supported for his familiar and casual rhetoric, although it often reflected his lack of knowledge on the topics he dealt with. One occurrence where his amiable and humorous demeanor settled itself negatively within his career was in 1984 when he “...made a joke about bombing Russia. The recording was transmitted to the press…” (History.com). This slip revealed how reckless of a figure Reagan was, and gave the public reason to question his adaptation of what is appropriate at the executive level, thus questioning his credibility.
All Reagan really did was close a chapter in the book of the cold war but there are still many unread stories and chapters. The collapse certainly did not mean the end of the cold war although many American history books will have you believe this. The Soviets could not keep up with their countries and states so they decided to secede and collapse the union which left Gorbachev to resign and watch the Union go. They were constantly criticized by the US for their flawed system and called it an “evil empire”. Roland Reagan came into the office during his first term hoping to use his administration to fight communism and end the Cold War. He finds out it was not easy as he thought. So, in his second term he turned to a different strategy getting to know someone like Gorbachev. The conservatives thought he was making a mistake. Roland Reagan’s success finally proved to the conservatives that his friendship with Gorbachev was not a dupe.
