Since the United States was founded, the real estate market has had an enormous impact on the economy, job creation, and peoples’ wealth. It has provided many with the sense of freedom and accomplishment that comes with the pride of property ownership. In the United States, the real estate market is one of the largest and most integral engines of the economy. It provides employment and incomes for millions of people, and for many it is often their greatest source of wealth and savings. This past summer, my mother and I toured a house for sale in our neighborhood and while talking to the real estate agent representing the property, she offered me a job as her assistant. Because real estate transactions can be a difficult and time consuming process for an individual or family to manage on their own, many people hire a real estate agent to assist them through the process (Zeller 4). Real estate agents help people buy property, sell property, or rent property. These could be single family homes, land, condos, or businesses. If it is a piece of land or property, a real estate agent has likely been involved at some point (Jenks). They discuss with clients the kind of property they desire and what they are willing to sell for or pay, and any creature comforts they are seeking. They then work with a real estate broker to find properties that suit their client's needs (Jackson). Real estate agents are responsible for knowing the markets they work in: the up-and-coming neighborhoods, the ones depreciating, and the ones that are expensive or on the rise. She became a real estate agent after selling her own home in 1996 when her friends and family suggested for her to get a license. Lily graduated with a degree of business from the University of Southern California and had previously worked in the business side of real estate, for a homebuilder. Today, her office with Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices is located in Laguna Beach, CA but she is able to conduct the majority of her research and marketing from her home office. She has advised me that one of the most important parts of being a real estate agent is to be very outgoing and sociable. She informed me that the average income for her brokerage is $59,700 - $72,200 annually. She does not regret her decision to become a real estate agent, as she has been earning more money than she previously was, and has more time to spend with her family
