The Real Holden What is the real Holden? In the short novel “Catcher in the Rye” By J.D Salinger is about Holden is in the mental hospital telling the story about himself at Pencey Prep, New york and with Phoebe. As the story goes on, it shows Holden’s characteristic in three different ways. He is a typical teenager, he behaves different from a normal teenager and he is lonely. As most teenager’s characteristic, include Holden, would be the desire of independent. In the beginning chapters, Holden gets expelled out of Pencey Prep and goes to New York. He gets out of school early but he did not go home. This means he knows he can solve the problems by himself and did respect his parents at all. That is the most teenager will do, they think they can solve the problem by themselves. Another thing is most teenagers do is act like an adult. As the time holden spend in New York, he does the things that teenager should avoid, as drinking, smoking, or have sex. He values the world and people as phony and hates phony. For example, He values Sunny as phony because she accepts the money first, but the next day she comes to her boss to ask for more money. Because that is the way the world is , he thinks it is crazy and makes him wants to jump out of the window. In addition, Holden once said the parade that relates to Jesus is phony and hates all these things. Furthermore, he even said if Jesus sees it, he will puke. In addition, he said he hates the movie because the characters are phony. On the other hand, he even said he hates the school because it is too phony.
