Views on Poverty In America there has always been five socioeconomic classes in which every individual is placed according to their birth family. With all these five socioeconomic classes in mind, brings the most widespread debate on the lowest category, also known as poverty. This debate consists of two main sides One: The government should not supply so many subsidies and programs, while the other explains that the government needs to establish a larger quantity of these programs and act against the deteriorated socioeconomic systems. This way of thinking is present by Zachary Freeman in Real Poverty Doesn’t Exist in America explaining “If you can’t survive the heat, you die. That’s poverty.”. Background to this Freeman is stating the living conditions of a sugar cane village that is adjacent to the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Freeman relates back to this village explaining a common thought by some individuals of America: Poverty in America and the state of people’s health in poverty is a blessing compared to people in poverty of lower placed countries. With this he presents the question of what should be prioritized by the people and implies that the government should not give as many handouts. This idea of less handouts from the Government stems from the opinion that many individuals take advantage of the multitudes of subsidies and programs, making Americans worried about a waste of the money they pay with taxes to support America and worried that we as a nation is making “lazy and entitled” people that bum off the people's money.
