Asha Patel Realistic Fiction Short Story Emeralds The slightly nauseating scent of yellow pencil shavings, sweat, and the cheap cologne of teenage boys filled my nostrils. The deafening buzz of two hundred chattering students rushed past my ears. Blurs of bright colors from those cheesily inspirational classroom posters caught my peripheral vision as I sauntered down the halls of McKinley High School towards my ninth period World History class. I took my time to this particular class because gosh, I just could not stand it. My teacher, Mr. Samuels, was this large, dumpy man with a ratty mustache, and all he ever did was drone on, and on, and on about dull names, places, and dates. Where to this afternoon?” Kellen asked, smiling. “Eliza’s,” I replied. “Apparently there’s an ‘emergency’ she needs to inform me of. She was looking real flustered at school today. The green pendant flashed and shone when it caught the slivers of light pouring in from the two windows in the bedroom. Now, my family definitely wasn’t poor, although we weren’t rich either. We could afford certain luxuries like an X-box for me and Kellen, and we lived in good-sized house, but there was definitely no way we could afford such a beautiful piece of jewelry.
