The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of Jay Gatsby who is a wealthy man who does everything he can to be with the love of his life, married Daisy Buchanan. Jay Gatsby first known as James Gatz who was a poor young man at first, later becomes extremely wealthy to get Daisy’s attention, to win her love. Jay Gatsby has this illusion of recreating the past that he had with Daisy, which he fails to do at the end. As Gatsby did not want to accept the reality of losing Daisy, similarly the Amanda from Bright Lights Big City by Jay McInerney tries to escape her life as the girl from Kansas. The narrator just divorced from his ex wife Amanda therefore he numbs his emotions with parties, drugs and alcohol. Amanda is from Kansas, and was at first working for a florist. Nick does have a thought that maybe Gatsby was lying but he make sure he has altered proof of his attendance to Oxford, in order for him not to be questioned about his wealth and to win Daisy over.
