Shays Rebellion served as the final nail in the coffin for the Articles of Confederation. Although the Articles of Confederation was America's first national document, it came with many weaknesses. One of the major weaknesses was that the federal government was too weak and therefore could not enforce laws. The Continental Congress borrowed money to fight in both the Revolutionary War and the French and Indian War therefore were in debt.
Once the American Revolution had ended, America required a new form of government to happen. November of 1777, the Continental Congress accepted the first American Constitution known as the Articles of Confederation. Shortly after the Articles were confirmed by the states in 1781, multiple problems started to arise that provided the United States with an ineffective government from 1781 all the way to 1789. They were not able to address any of the problems dealing with the American Nation due to the lacking features of the government under the Articles. Moreover, the Articles presented each state with too much power that lead to a loose confederation creating a limited power to the central government.
The Articles of Confederation, written in 1776, were the foundation to a war-based government. At the time of the drafting this was deemed necessary, but years later, it became a burden on the States. A few select men were tasked with the editing of the Articles, to make them more sustainable to the 'modern' times of 1787. However, those men chose to drop the Articles of Confederation completely in favor of a new, improved Constitution.
The Articles of Confederation strengths were democratic and state dominated, and its weakness was that the federal government had no power to tax and it couldn’t unify the states constitutionally by laws. The strengths of the Articles are few. The government under the Articles of Confederation successfully waged a war for independence against Britain. Additionally, the Articles also allowed states to dominate their own states, such as taxing, regulating the trade and economy, etc. However, under the Articles of Confederation, there was no chief executive, there was no court system, there was not even a way for the central government to force the states to pay tax.
With the revolution won, the colonist’s drafted the first known constitution as the Articles of Confederation. Favoring power to the separate states instead of a national government, the influence of King George III permanently ridded the conscience of the colonists from one body, or group, having excessive power over the nation. In all, the power came from the People. Regardless of the colonist’s success, however, led to more dire situations in their growth.
The Articles of Confederation failed because the articles offered no solutions. Many of these issues did not propose innovation and were primarily conservative providing each state with its own autonomy with minimal influence by the federal government (Schultz, n.d.). This led to multiple disagreements between each state, with each state viewing its own power as a priority over the unity of the Confederation. This created multiple weaknesses within the articles, which includes the following (Articles of Confederation, 2018). Each state, regardless of its size, only had one vote in Congress.
The Constitution will fix America and is critical to our safety. The Articles of Confederation are faulty and a stronger new national government is needed in order to be strong enough to protect the people. At the moment, National Government has no money or authority. Giving government power to tax helps us prosper and gives us more protection. Britain is still keeping forts on our land and Spanish will not let us use the Mississippi River.

The Articles of Confederation were established as an attempt to create a government that was unlike Britain’s. Unfortunately, the Articles of Confederation had several weaknesses. When in the process of repairing those weaknesses, the Federalists and the Anti-federalists formed. The Articles of Confederation were very weak as well as useless to America and because of this, the Federalists and the Anti-Federalists could not agree on a new type of government.
After the Articles of Confederation failed because they failed to give enough power to the national government and congress, our founding father’s needed to reflect on its flaws for a new system to be set in place. Their new creation, our Constitution, was then set into place, and was created from a basis of the Articles of Confederation. The Articles of Confederation directly influence the Constitution by its failure by changing some of the responsibilities of the federal and state governments. The Articles of Confederation gave too much power to the states, and the Constitution changed that.
The Articles of Confederation was an agreement among the thirteen original states of the United States that served as the first constitution. The Articles had first been introduced by Richard Henry Lee in the Second Continental Congress. Although the Articles of Confederation has made its contributions throughout history, the Articles, however, did not last very long and had been proven inadequate from the very start. Today, our founding fathers are rolling in their graves. July 2, 1776, a date that John Adams believed would be “the most memorable epocha in the history of America.” It was on this date that the newly formed nation of the United States of America formally declared independence from the British Empire. This date marked what would be the beginning of a long and bloody struggle for independence and, more importantly, the natural rights given to us by God. They fought this war knowing that it was very likely that they would all meet their end by British hands, yet they kept fighting.

The primary economic reason the Articles of Confederation failed was no power to tax by the central government. Creation and Purpose Of the Articles Of Confederation: The Articles Of Confederation was a framework created by Americans leaders after the American Independence War on March 2, 1781. The Articles Of Confederation loosely unified the states under a single government body, the Confederation Congress. But this framework was soon abandon because of its weakness. In my opinion, the American leaders were doing the right thing in terns of governing. There was indeed needed a government in order to organize the country.
