America has had its fair share of troubled times, but the widest known wars throughout history happen to involved the world. World War I and World War II cost many American lives as well as other nations. All the reasons for fighting these wars can be justified, but whether that justification is true, the world may never know.
World War I (WWI), took place over a span of a few years causing many deaths. WWI took place in the years 1914-1919. It started due to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand (Staff, 2016). World War II started in the year 1939 and ended in the year 1945 (Yanak, 1993). Although war was much more than just the Holocaust. Normally people immediately think Hitler and he concentration camps. Glenna Matthews concludes, “The war cost tens of thousands of American lives,” (Matthews, 2000). In 1939 Germany and the Soviet Union signed a nonaggression pact, they then invaded Poland causing Great Britain and France to declare war, which officially began WWII. Over twelve million lives were lost during this war, of those twelve million six million were Jews (Yanak, 1993). The Allies included Great Britain, France, China, the United States, and the Soviet Union. The Axis powers included Germany, Italy, Japan, and until 1941 the Soviet Union (Yanak, 1993).
America did not start out fighting in this war. America entered the war, at the request of President Woodrow Wilson, on April 6th, 1917 (Lee, 2017). Germany began using submarines to sink American supply ships before they could reach the British who relied on American goods. Ship after ship would go down, most being American. After Berlin tried to convince Mexicans to attack America. America declared war (Stone, 2008). America really only joined the war to protect its own country from the others.
