Vivisection(animal testing): The cutting of or operation on a living animal usually for physiological or pathological investigation; broadly: animal experimentation especially if considered to cause distress to the subject(Merriam-Webster). Isn’t that a mouthful. Although that’s what the definition is (according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary), many people believe that the testings are for the greater good of humanity. But have you considered if animal testing has no benefits, and should be illegal? There are many things to keep in mind. Multiple animals will be experimented on, then later killed after used. If the animals didn’t die right off the bat, they’re still injured and kept in captivity(Ian Murnaghan). Scientists/doctors using animals for medical research will do this to find a cure for a human illness. Although, research shows that less than 2%(1.16%) of human illnesses can ever be seen in animals - over 98% never affect them(33 Reasons Why Animal Testing Is Pointless). Animals don’t get the illnesses that we humans do. Conditions such as the types of heart diseases, multiple types of cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s disease, or schizophrenia. But signs of these diseases can be artificially caused in animals, to attempt to recreate the human disease(Cruelty Free International). Another thing to notice is that there are more than 1000 substances hazardous to lab animals, although 97% are safe to humans(33 Reasons Why Animal Testing Is Pointless). But the animals DNA structure is close, not exact. Scientists even noted that over 100 mouse cell types found, only 50% of the DNA (that is accountable for regulating genes in mice) could be matched to a human’s DNA(Cruelty Free International). But every animal DNA structure is different from one another. For instance, a mouse could have a positive reaction to a substance; but a bird could have a negative reaction to the same substance.
