As much as we may argue, fuss, and fight, we need them. They are our biggest supporters when we are doing well, yet are also there when we need a shoulder to cry on. These are just a few of the millions of things that they provide to us and explains why family is essential to a happy life. Now imagine if they weren’t there. Imagine if you felt you were all alone and had no one to comfort and motivate you to do better in life. Imagine if you were also being beaten at home. These are the things that Christopher McCandless was experiencing as he was growing up and he still is being criticized for leaving civilization for the wild. He spoke about them in a very negative way and never showed them the love that a typical child would show towards their parents. In a letter that McCandless wrote to his sister, he stated that, “I’m going to have to be real careful not to accept any gifts from them in the future because they will think they have bought my respect” (21). So in other words, Chris didn’t respect his parents. His father secretly had another family and it caused Chris to lose the rest of the respect he had for them. Many people feel that Chris’s parents were very supportive of him and that it was society that drove him out. Others may feel that he entered the wild due to mental illness, or the influences of Jack London or other literary sources. To those people I must inform them that our definition of support, may not be the same definition of others. Chris’s parents offered him a new car and he became infuriated because he had told his parents many times before that he was satisfied with the car he already had. To most, that is support but Chris on the other hand felt disrespected. To those with other theories to why Chris may have left, I just want you to think about Chris’s situation. If Chris were here today, he probably wouldn’t admit that his parents were the reason behind this because he knew what he wanted to do. On the other hand, his parents are what ultimately drove him aways from his family causing Chris to be find himself into the Yukon.
