In Mesopotamia, there was a king by the name of Hammurabi. He believed in a strict set of laws. Some people say the set of laws were very unfair, but some people believed that it was fair and it was the right thing to have. The first reason why some people in Mesopotamia thought it was fair was that every single crime, big or small, had some sort of a punishment(Hammurabi's Code (18th Century)). The crime can be the tiniest thing in the world but since it's a crime something will happen to you. For example, Hammurabi had a famous quote: “ an eye for an eye”.(“Hammurabi's Code: An”.) That means whatever he did to a person the same thing will happen to you.(“Hammurabi's Code: An”.) For example, if he pokes someone's eye out you will be charged and he will have his eye poked out.(“Hammurabi's Code: An”.) But there was a slight unfair part to the laws. The reason for that is if the doctor performed surgery and the patient died in the process the doctor himself would be sentenced to death. Even if the patient died of natural causes. The doctor would be sentenced to death. (“ Hammurabi's Code ( 18th century ) ” ) Matter of fact most doctor said no to prosecutors because doctors wouldn't want to take the risk of messing up than being sentenced to death. But some doctors would say yes and was super careful and was successful with it. Well some were successful there were some that no matter what they did the would have no choice but to fail and be sentenced to death. People were afraid to become doctors because of the consequences and they were afraid that they would have to hide forever (“ Hammurabi's Code ( 18th century ) ” ). Yes, some doctors skipped town and had to hide for a while. They left their families and left their whole life. Some were scared of death even though it was a city-state of war like Sparta. Doctors did everything they could to be successful if they took the challenge but still back then they didn't have the technology we have today so most surgeries did not go as planned and failed.
