1. The North won the Civil War because they were much better off than the South. They had a lot of great resources; they had more money and more people. The South did not have any of these resources. The one thing that they had to rely on was their cotton. However, they could not fight as well with just cotton. They did not have a lot of weapons just what was in their closets basically. The North had a ton of people that were fighting against the South and although the South had motivation and the battle was in their backyard it just wasn’t enough to win. Out of the three battles the Gettysburg, the Vicksburg and the Antietam the first most important battle was Gettysburg, it was the changed the war last minute , it would also be the last time the south would try to make such an effort to end the war with a truce. If the south won they were planning on delivering a letter to Lincoln to have a truce. The second most important was the Antietam , it was one of the first major battles in the American Civil War to take place on Union soil, it showed the North just how strong the South could be, and that this war was going to last until they won. At the beginning of the war the Northern people would say they were fighting for the abolition of slavery when in all reality they themselves were not even sure why they were fighting except to gain superiority. In many instances they were just as racist as those in the South. However, they were mostly fighting to hold the Union together. It wasn't until later in the war politics changed, and then there was the motivation to free the slaves. When African Americans actually got involved, suddenly it was time for them to help fight, fighting for their own people. It was a part of the racism to place them in small jobs such as; cooks and cleaners. Even when they fought they were paid less than other white Americans. In the South, at the beginning of the war, no soldiers would have said that they were fighting to retain slaves. Most Southerners didn't own slaves, only the wealthy upper classes did.
