In The Crucible Arthur Miller’s reasons for his conflict was religion which tight everything in the story. Throughout the story faith was the main topic. The church and males had power in the community of Salem. “The Salem tragedy… developed from a paradox… Purely it was this for good resolutions, even high purposes the people of Salem developed a theocracy, an association of state and religious power whose role was to keep the community together.” The community of Salem is a very patriarchal. Where the man has the most power. Throughout the story the citizens of Salem are hanged after being accused of being witchcraft. When the girls were questioned about almost all said Tituba, Reverend Parris’s servant made them perform witchcraft and dance in the forest. Betty gets flue, one of the girls that was part of the girls group that were dancing. The town supposed that she is overcome with evil spirits and the town forces Tituba to tell why she has compressed with the devil. All of the girls remain to blame Tituba for this and she gets accused of being a witch and Performing witchcraft. Due to this Tituba would be hanged to death or she has to confess to being a witch. In addition, Rebecca Nurse regularly criticized the distressed girls for experimenting in prediction previous to the witch trials. Since many Salem residents who criticized the witch trials and the individuals involved were often suspect of being witches themselves, Nurse’s criticism made her even more of a mark. Nurse’s many accusers stated that she frequently seemed at their homes in spirit form to torment and attack them. Nurse denied all of the accusations, stating during her inspection on, “I can say before my Eternal Father I am innocent and God will clear my innocence…The Lord knows I have not hurt them. I am an innocent person.” (III.542-543). Rebecca Nurse lived in Salem Village on a large farm. She was known for her religiousness, and was a follower of Salem church. John Proctor was a successful farmer and the first male to be named a witch during the Salem Witch Trials decision. John Proctor was an elderly man of 60 years of age when accused, tried, and hanged for involved with witchcraft. Preserving his innocence until death, he challenged the court to reconsider the strength of spectral evidence. Though it did not save him, his heritage is remembered in Arthur Miller's play The Crucible. Though not an historically accurate representation, The Crucible does bring attention
