In 1962, two cousins accused Bridget Bishop of being a witch. One of the cousins, Betty Paris, was the revenants daughter. Betty and Abigail accused two local white women and slave Tituba of being witches. Then the accused were sent off to jail in Boston.
Abigail Williams is the source of the witchcraft hysteria in Salem. Abigail is first accused of bewitching Betty Parris in the woods one night. She quickly disputes the accusation by saying they: Ruth Putnam, Tituba, Betty Parris, Mary Warren, and Abigail herself, were only dancing despite it also being highly looked down upon. By starting out with this single lie, her story snowballs and eventually leads to the downfall of Salem. By associating herself with Betty Parris and Ruth Putnam, both of which are sick while Abigail is well, Abigail is submitting herself to a fight she can’t win unless she lies.
Rebecca was a 71-year-old woman, the wife of Francis Nurse who was a wealthy farmer and landlord in the Salem village, and had many children and grandchildren (Hill 87). She was very pious and everyone in the Salem village thought of her as an “exemplary piety” in the Puritan community (Linder). Rebecca had a very strong faith in God and told her friends on her sickbed that she recognized more God’s presence in her sickness than any other time in her life (Hill 88). Rebecca was a very respectable woman and supported by most of Salem villagers who believed in her innocence. After she was arrested and prosecuted because of the false accusations made by the “afflicted” women and girls’ against her, thirty-nine notable members of the community came forward, signed and submitted a petition to assure her innocence and piety (Hill 100).
In today’s society you are innocent until proven guilty. Could you imagine it being the other way around? Many people were wrongly accused of witchcraft during the Salem Witch Trials. But who really started it all? Abigail Williams is most responsible for the witchcraft hysteria because she is a liar and often manipulated others in order to save herself from trouble.
Once they saw the result of the girls naming off names at once, Reverend Hale wanted to help the girls instead of hang them for they did not cause themselves to become under the devils power. Once he saw what was to happen to the women that confess he believed that much more woman were witches especially the ones rattled off by Abigail Williams and Betty. He wanted the girls to confess to their witchcraft so that they would not be hung for their wrongdoing. He was very determined to make Elizabeth Proctur confess so that he would not witness her hanging. Once Rebecca Nurse was accused then Reverend Danforth did not want to believe the witch trials
Rebecca Nurse, well respected, hanged because she refused to admit to a crime she did not commit. Reverend Hale, the one person who had a chance at finding the truth through all of the madness, was the only person who stayed true to himself. When people don’t want to get in trouble for something they normally blame it on someone else. Now most of the time it doesn't end out that bad, or they find out the person was not telling the truth, but that is not the same for the people of Salem. The main cause of the Salem Witch Trials is Abigail Williams, in Arthur Miller’s Crucible, because of her calling people witches, 20 people got killed there was a lot of fear and no trust for anyone. It’s the fear and people not trusting others that made the witch trials bad, and she seemed to create this hysteria because she feared getting in trouble, she wanted to get revenge, and because once she started she couldn’t stop without getting very punished.
Rebecca Nurse is almost a saint who is very kind and wise. Having these people executed will leave the village in a less pleasant state. These people are role models of society and it would not be very fair to have them killed over the foolishness of some girls. The justice system is flawed to its core.
Death and hysteria loomed over the town of Salem during the dark period known as the Salem Witch Trial of 1692. Over the period of 15 weeks, witch hunts and a number of unnecessary killings occurred. Although there is many speculations as to what caused this outbreak, it’s known that there is multiple reason. The Salem Witch Trials were caused by the accounts of Betty Parris and her cousin, the hysteria that consumed the town, as well as the idea of Ergotism overcoming Salem. One cause for the witch trial hysteria was the case of Betty Parris and her older cousin Abigail Williams.
Rebecca is accused for murdering the seven children of Ann Putnam who have died long before any questioning arose. Following this accusation, which is one of many that are false, Rebecca would go through the court process of either admitting to her actions as a witch or

Bridget Bishop, a resident of Salem, was the first person to be tried as a witch. Surprisingly, Bishop was accused of witch craft by the highest number of witneses. After Bishop, more than two hundred people were tried of practicing witchcraft and twenty were executed. Many of these accusations arose from jealous, lower class members of society, especially towards women who had come into a great deal of land or wealth. Three young children by the names of Elizabeth, Abigail, and Ann were the first three people to be “harmed” by the witches.
In Salem, Massachusetts a series of hearings and prosecutions started, commonly known as the Salem Witchcraft Trials. The witchcraft trials in Salem became a big concern after two-hundred innocent people were accused and twenty people were executed. Many people of Salem believed the court was just in accusing all these victims. A seldom amount of people went against the court in saying that the court was a fraud and that the decisions were biased being made. Abigail Williams held all the power in the court and determined who was “guilty” or not.
This magnanimous, sensible woman refuses to follow the hysteria even to save her own life. Nurse,s charity becomes apparent in Act one when reverand John Hale comments on her reputation outside Salem. Nurse's magnanimous personality is emphasised even more in act 3 when Hale says "If Rebecca Nurse be tainted, then nothings left to stop the whole green world from burning". This quote marks the point in the play where Hale realizes that innocent people are being accused of witchcraft. Rebecca Nurs refuses to abandon her moral code, even when facing death.
However, records from the Salem trials show that her original convicted crime was not witchcraft, but having an “independence of mind”, and being an “unsubmissive character”. She was “…indicted for the bewitching of certain persons” and blamed for a smallpox outbreak that she had ‘caused’ by
