My idea came from watching a documentary on how prisons and jails in Europe have a different approach dealing with inmates when being punished for a crime they did. This place was in Norway, their jails are actually treating their inmates with gratitude. Erwin James (2013) labeled Norway jails inmates “live in conditions that critics brand 'cushy' and 'luxurious'.” These amazing jails have positive results because they have the least reoffenders in the world. The results of my topics should be positive, the reason I say this is because it been tested out in different countries and they had amazing results. Sterbenz, C. It was compared to different state prisons around the country, the Green prison program had positive influence in prison which helped reduce the percentage of recidivism. Green prison programs existed since the 1990’s and has been placed in different geographic location such as New York, California, and Washington. It’s a better alternative to other rehabilitation programs that showed they failed in do any good. These programs are known to have inmates participate in positive way to nature, like engaging in gardening: which has activities to prisoners that involve them landscaping, green roof gardening, and caring for animals and environment. For example program participants released between 1999 and 2007, showed reduced recidivism from 1-3 years release of prisoners in Green prison programs compared New York state prisons and General US prison population. The percentage of recidivism for 1 year release in Green prison was only 14%, New York was 23%, and general US prison was 23%. Recidivism after 3 years for Green prison programs was only 31.83%, New York prison was 42% percent, and General US prison population was 45.20 percent. SANDER VAN DER LINDEN, and Woodrow Wilson showed the importance of criminal behavior being influenced in this form of prison where it was of eco-therapy to prisoners, which helped attribute to offer an form of relaxation and relief from such harsh social environments.
