Two “orphan” girls grew up together in a shelter, with two problematic mothers, with two different racial identities, with two incompatible classes. One of the two main girls claimed “It didn’t matter that we looked like salt and pepper standing there and that’s what the other kids called us sometimes” (132), and eventually they were stuck together in the shelter because they were in the same situation of being isolated.
