The conditions of the south after the Civil War were devastating. Sherman burned a path from Mississippi to Georgia's coast. Military Governors seized vegetable farm lands and estates that were once beautiful. They did not have representation in congress until 1885. Before then they improvised for many years after the war. Reconstruction was absolutely necessary, especially because bridges, farm land, and buildings were destroyed. At the time the South didn't have the resources to repair all the things that were damaged after the war. In that case they had to get help from the North in order for there to be not as much chaos.
