Elementary school is one of the most important parts of our lives, it lays down the essential foundation for our future academic endeavors. Growing up on the reservation and attending the elementary school located within its boundaries gave me a unique experience. I quickly noticed things were always changing. There was no consistent structure, which contributed to the difficulty for students to adapt to the school system. When I transitioned from the elementary school on the reservation to attending middle school in the neighboring town, I realized I was far behind. Many of the other students were already familiar with the material we were covering in class, making it seem like a review for them, but it was all new to me. Solutions 2 (1 12 pages) - Recruitment and Retention (and training) for Native Teachers. The first solution I am proposing today is the need for recruitment and retention of Native teachers. This is imperative for creating a culturally responsive and supportive learning environment for the students. Native teachers can serve as a powerful role model and be a person of comfort to the students because they share cultural knowledge, experience, and perspectives. It’s important for students to feel comfortable with their teachers, so they can build connections and make it easier for teachers to learn and help students with issues inside and out of the classroom. Having a person who is also native be present in the classroom helps to validate the identities of Native students and strengthens their sense of belonging within the education
