In Stewart O’Nan’s short novel, The Last Night at the Lobster, the staff of a Red Lobster restaurant in New Britain, Connecticut works their last shift together. Their manager Manny attempts to keep the restaurant in full swing though there is a horrid blizzard and very few costumers coming in. Manny’s employees are a diverse group; however the women of the staff tend to give Manny the most distress. At the Red Lobster, there were some women, compared to others, who made the restaurant a better work environment. Compared to the other women employees, one of the more unreliable ones was Kendra. She was introduced early in the novel as a twenty year old student who was a hostess and server at the Red Lobster. Though Manny had told her she could not come to the Olive Garden, she came in the last day as a favor to him. The kitchen staff liked her, but only as a young pretty girl to look at. Manny and Jacquie had a relationship that both began and ended while working at the Red Lobster together. Though their relationship ended and Jacquie moved on, Manny still has deep feelings for her, making working together tough. Despite the awkwardness from Manny, Jacquie still gets her job done. Unlike Nicolette and Kendra, Jacquie seems stay quiet while working and not get involved with their bickering. She will slip snarky remarks, but never get involved in an argument with the other girls. During her shift Jacquie stayed on top of her tables and helped out when needed. Besides Nicolette, the entire staff likes Jacquie. Manny had asked her to come to the Olive Garden with them, but she politely declined, claiming it was time for them both to move on.
