The Hunt For Red October by Tom Clancy is an exciting book about the Cold War that keeps readers on edge from start to finish. This book is set in the height of the Cold War where the US and the USSR are close to having an all-out war with each other and if they do, it will end in a nuclear fallout. The author explained the military strategy very thoroughly and with lots of detail. The story is focused on the main character Marko Ramius, who is a Soviet submarine captain. And Marko’s plan is to weaken the US with his nuclear submarine, the Red October. From the beginning of the book, suspense is already rising as Marko sets his plan in place. The Soviets are led up to think that Marko will launch a nuclear attack since he has nuclear weapons, the Americans are led up to think that Marko’s submarine is on the way to the US, with intentions of attacking the US. Therefore, they are finding ways to stop this from happening. As the story continues, tensions between the Soviets and Americans are rising. The American Government will use a CIA agent, Jack Ryan, to look more closely at the location of the Red October, the American Government will use Jack Ryan to determine where the Red October is, so they can prevent it from coming to the US shores. Although Ryan is with the US, he has different ideas of what Marko is trying to do, as he thinks that his true intentions are to hurt America. Jack Ryan will do his best in the book to prove that he is right about the Americans as he doesn’t want things to get worse. As for the side of the Soviets, they are also trying to stop the Red October from coming any further. That ends up causing naval battles between the Soviets and the Americans, which all occur beneath the ocean. More and more battles happen, as well as maneuvers to avoid costs that cannot be
