Among the 1820’s and 30’s the Social Reform Era took charge throughout the nation. This era declared change for women, Native Americans and African Americans (Document K) since free white males had conquered political suffrage for themselves. The rest of America’s population was left ignored and neglected. To avoid this unwanted discrimination, the Abolition and Women’s Rights Movements were created.
During the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s, shifts in the political and societal views were very apparent. Through out the time era, we saw figures of great importance and the strength of activists are its highest. The build up of severe racism and discrimination led to the beginning of the civil rights era, which led to several divides in blacks, as well as a beginning of a more enriched society.. The Civil Rights era had several key events leading up to the full force of the movement - including bus boycotts, Freedom Riders, and the Little Rock Nine. Once the movement began to increase in involvement, many supporters were gained.
Women engaged in social and political reform, including the attempt to implement the Equal Rights Amendment, which demanded equality of the sexes. Despite this amendment ultimately not getting ratified, it underscores women’s attempts to challenge the patriarchal norms and systems during this time period. There is still work to be done to achieve complete gender equality because of issues like the persistence of gender stereotypes, wage disparities, restricted access to reproductive healthcare, etc. The social movements created throughout decades of protests, marches, lectures, lobbying, writing, and practicing civil disobedience since the mid-19th Century have successfully done what many Americans considered a radical change in the Constitution. During the 19th and 20th centuries Men reigned supreme. The lack of rights for women and poor people sparked protests and were the cause of the appearance of rights activists. Civil liberty issues in the American past have been resolved in the aspects of women’s rights and poor people’s rights but based on perceptions, little has been resolved. Women’s civil liberty issues have been resolved through Women’s rights activists and many years of pushing for constitutional equality.
The 1960s was a decade that was successful but yet impacted the world in a negative way, but also led to many setbacks we still have going on today. The 1960’s was the height of the Vietnam War and a time when equality did not exist for all. There was the women's rights movement that was inspired by the Civil Rights Act. There were protests and movements for equality throughout the United States. Whether it was with women being treated unfairly or unequally or African Americans being called ‘animals’.
The Women’s Movement was a symbolic movement in achieving political and civil equality. It assisted women lifestyles in the United States, granting them equal opportunities as men. Therefore, the Equal Rights Amendment guaranteed equal rights with men and the Equal Pay Act guaranteed equal pay. But these opportunities rarely helped women since they were prohibited and discriminated from universities and communal school, young girls have to be taught at home by mothers due to the segregation from males and females. In the 1960s, organizations were predominantly constructed for women since they were driven away from society of men and can’t attend schools and colleges.
The 1950s and 1960s were a time of great social change. There was a rising call for equality among many factions of Americans. Immigrants, women, and African-Americans all began to stand up and demand more rights. Arguably the biggest movement for equality during the ‘50s and ‘60s was the African-American civil rights movement. The non-aggressive civil rights movement led by Martin Luther King was more effective than the aggressive civil rights movement led by Malcolm X because the members of the non-aggressive civil rights movement broke common stereotypes of African-Americans and provided a stark contrast between themselves and the violent white ruling class, while the aggressive civil rights movement created and reinforced negative stereotypes
Protests over the unfair treatment of different races, especially African Americans, and the rights of women were hallmarks of this era (Rosmanitz, n.d.) The election of John F. Kennedy spurred the creation of the War on Poverty, and Great Society programs of federal assistance to the poor (Tindall & Shi, n.d.). Like the 1920s, Americans enjoyed high levels of prosperity during the 1960s. This prosperity helped create a robust middle-class in which more families enjoyed the modern conveniences we take for granted today (Active USA Center , n.d.). However, this ideal lifestle could take a toll, especially on women who were required to be everything to everyone, often times leading to intense dissatisfaction (Active USA Center , n.d.).
The civil rights movements that occurred in the 1960’s changed American Society forever. Some of the most memorable and polarizing movements and laws include Bloody Sunday, the Fair Housing Act, the Freedom Riders and the Montgomery Bus Riots. These are just a few of the demonstrations and laws that occurred during this volatile time period in American History. Many of these events have been have revisited and taught in American History class throughout students’ high school and college years. These events have been archived in annuals of American History and have their place of importance right along with the Bill of Rights and the 19th Amendment that allowed women the vote.
“One individual can begin a movement that turns the tide of history. Martin Luther King in the civil rights movement [is an example] of people standing up with courage and non-violence to bring about needed changes” (Jack Canfield). The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s was a renewed struggle for equal rights. Despite African Americans being freed of slavery, they were still mistreated and discriminated against. The South was taking great measures to ensure that African Americans could not be equal to whites, such as Jim Crow laws and the literacy test.
One of the most momentous reform movements that our country has experienced has been the Women's Rights Movement. This movement has had influential effects on the economic, social, educational, and political aspects of women's lives. If the pivotal reform of women's rights had not occurred, then our world and lives today could look a lot different. The Women's Rights Movement started gaining momentum in 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention in Seneca Falls, New York with the “Declaration of Sentiments''. This document stated that all men and women are created equal and women should have equal rights to vote, own property, and seek employment.
During the 1960s, the Civil Rights movement was making its mark on the Unites States history. The Civil Rights movement was not just one single movement it included the feminist movement, gay/lesbian movement, the disability movement, and the Chicano/a movement. Activists wanted change and equality for its people. For example, the feminist movement wanted to be able to divorce and work a job. It was a time for change throughout the United States.
Moses was a man of the house of Levi went and took as wife a daughter of Levi. The women conceived in bore a son, she then took him, hid him for three months. She could no longer hide him anymore, so she took an ark of bulrushes for him, daubed it with asphalt and pitch, she put him in there, and laid it in the reeds by the river back. The daughter of the pharaoh had come out to bathe at the river, and that’s when she notice an ark among the reeds, she sent her maid to get it. When she opened it, the baby wept.
