I am currently an undeclared Liberal Arts major, but I am leaning towards declaring Women’s Studies as my major. I will likely pick up a minor or two somewhere along the way on my journey at UNH due to my wide variety of interests that has made it difficult to declare a major in the first place. The 2016 election was the catalyst for my passion in critical social justice due to the hurtful nature of the campaigns of several of the candidates running for president. During the end of the election I was in an AP Government and Politics class that examined the intentions and outcomes of every move each politician and political party made daily. The only person in my family that works in business is my uncle, but he lives in California and I have no idea what he does for work. Other than him, my family is made up of mostly teachers and blue collar workers. The people that I’ve been raised around all hold this naturally suspicious attitude towards big companies, they feel that businesses are always trying to pull one over on them due to being hurt in the past. Naturally, I’ve unintentionally adopted this suspicious nature and I’m taking this class in an effort to better understand the whole of the business world, not just that made up of the experiences of people in my town and family. The media has also been particularly harsh towards the business world in more recent years, but I don’t think that’s without reason. It seems that people nowadays are more likely to read stories about scandals and bankruptcy than they are about how the business world is thriving. I don’t know why that is, maybe the rest of society also feels naturally scornful towards the success of companies. When positive stories are published they’re usually more about how companies are helping the less fortunate via donations or increasing economic prosperity in certain areas, and less about how they’re profit margins have significantly increased. This is probably because society is not likely to be affected by the prosperity of businesses if companies are not investing that money back into the world that helped them gain
