I remember the first time when I had to called Child Protective Services to file a report for child abuse. One of the questions that I was asked by the case worker taking the report was, is there anything related to the family's culture that will be important to consider? At first, it got me confused since according to me abuse is abuse regardless of the cultural background. But you see, I gained more experience identifying cases in which a report was necessary and the question became more relevant then. There were numerous cases in which a report was made immediately because there was evidence either physically, psychologically or emotionally that the child was enduring abuse. Little did I know that for a Latino parent that just makes things worse, since they feel that if they go to jail for disciplining the child might as well do it right and get the rod of correction out. Once this has taken place, the child feels that it will be pointless to make the threat because it is going to come back and hurt them worse. Therefore, the discipline continues and when the child gets to a stage of authority and understanding the best feeling is to reflect back and understand that their success as a responsible adult has a lot to do with the discipline that was given growing up. absolutely not. There is a number of children that grow up despising discipline. What may attribute to that variation? I simply believe that parenting styles play a big part. If the parenting style was authoritarian in which all the child experienced was discipline and strictness or a rigid response from the parents or even worse if the parenting style was permissive and the child did not experience discipline a all and always got away with everything; discipline may be something that the child did not get to develop a full understanding of. Due to this two types of parenting we have adults that have lack of stability because the moment when they can't get away with their plans the best thing to do is to move, contradict, disrespect, not submit and even fight back. This affects their ways of parenting, how they conduct themselves in their jobs, and how they perceive figures of
