During my student teaching experience, I taught an 11th grade class at Gateway Public High School which serves the residents of Monroeville and Pitcairn. Gateway High School provides grades 9 through 12 for the Gateway School District which is a large, suburban, public school district located in Monroeville, Pennsylvania. According to district officials, in the 2012-2013 school year Gateway School District provided educational services to 4,101 pupils. Of those total 4,101 students, the high school enrolls 1,371 students and 32% of those students are economically disadvantaged. The Pennsylvania Department of Education currently ranks Gateway Senior High School 47th within Pennsylvania. The student body makeup consists of about 53 percent male …show more content…

The decade contained the discovery and expansion of many inventions and cultural norms that still exist. The increase of radio and mass communication can be connected with today’s expansion of the internet and cell phones. The role of women changed during the 1920s, paving the way for equality, opportunities and changing styles that continue to evolve. The prohibition of alcohol was an experiment in which the government attempted to legislate morality, and eventually failed due to the increase in organized crime and corruption. These issues are still with us, if only in different forms. The above examples are just a few of the connections that students can make with the 1920s and their everyday lives. Also, students will need to understand how the United States emerged from WWI as an industrial giant. Students need to know that economic, technological, and social advancements are changing the face of the American landscape. I will determine that my students have this prerequisite knowledge by administering a multiple choice pre-assessment at the start of the unit. I will collect the information needed to determine my student’s prior knowledge by recording the results of the pre-assessment and using that data to make any changes to the structure of my unit
