I’m currently a student at San Joaquin Valley College, working towards becoming a certified medical assistant in which I have proficiency in typing skills and accomplished CPR and HIPAA certification. My passion is the medical field where I can assist the needs and services of others while being able to connect and create a comfortable environment for patients. On an interpersonal level, I excel as a conversationalist to personalize each interaction I encounter. Through this program I hope to learn the fundamentals of community based research, how to advocate for health policy, a most importantly how to educate communities on health. I believe that is the most rewarding thing I can get out of this program. Having the ability, the power, to change someone’s life, by just giving him or her basic health care knowledge is so empowering. Knowing that I changed that life, that because of me hopefully their health will better instead of worsen. Through this program I hope to learn from the community, to learn their experiences, which will allow me to be even more conscious of the disparities they are forced to face, hence causing me to ponder “how can this issue be fixed?”, “what policy can be implemented”?.

My top interest at school is The Academy of Health Professions. This rigorous program gives classroom instructions, hands on laboratory, and clinical experience. As a class of 17 students, we volunteer at the local clinical to get experience as Certified Nursing Assistants. Every other class, I take the role of an adult for 2 hours and become a CNA. I provide my patients with oral care, bathing, feeding, and changing linen.

At seven in the morning on July 20, 2015 I arrived at LNA Health Careers School in Concord to a start of a big step in my life, not knowing what to really expect. Ever since grade school, I was passionate about working in the field of medicine, and science. I enjoyed anatomy, medical spelling and terminology, and reading about the healthcare industry. Because of my passion for healthcare, I decided to to attend Health Sciences High. There, I was given the best opportunities, such as, medical internships and college health courses. My plans and goals had turned me into a mature young adult.
I worked with young children in the resource room with the staff that included teachers, special needs assistants and an occupational therapist, who routinely visits the school. I found the experience immensely rewarding to see the progress the children made in such a short space of time. I was able to see and discuss the different exercises that the occupational therapist used with the children in order for them to make progress. This gave me a great insight into the work environment and daily tasks of an occupational therapist and it made me realise that I had the personality traits and abilities that suited this career
I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals.
