I volunteered at Lenoir Memorial Hospital the Summer of 2015. I received about 58 hours of community service. Ms. Ann Durusky is the Director of Volunteer Services at the hospital. Volunteering at the hospital entails admitting and discharging patients from their rooms, escorting patients or guests to where they need to be, delivering emails, flowers, and gift baskets. At first, I was sent with the lead volunteer of our group and a partner, until I was able to remember what procedures to take in different situations.
Morehouse School of Medicine is an appealing option for pursuing my medical education. When reading Morehouse’s mission statement, improving the health and well-being of individuals and communities grasped my attention. My clinical experiences revolve around communities that are underserved, and sharing the same mission as Morehouse is key to becoming the physician I aspire to be. One of the things that stood out to me about Morehouse is the student run Good Samaritan Health Center. I am very interested about being involved with God Samaritan, because it is akin to the Siloam Family Health Center that I volunteer at, and it is an embodiment of Morehouse’s mission.
This was where I first developed my multitasking skills to oversee and coordinate four clinical research studies. My strong communication and interpersonal skills enabled me to meet crucial deadlines and work efficiently with physicians, nurses, pharmaceutical sponsors, and study monitors. I strive not only to be a great employee and team player but also to serve and positively impact my community, especially the medically underserved. For more than five years, I have volunteered over 1,000 hours, and most recently, I serve through the Lestonnac Free Clinic and Access OC organization as a Spanish interpreter. As a bilingual Spanish-speaking nurse, I hope to help my community by breaking down the language barrier between patients and the healthcare team in order to ensure the accurate continuity of care.
Throughout my college career, I have been engaged civically through community service at various organizations such as Mentoring Majesties, Fannie Battle Day Home for Children, and Preston Taylor Ministries performing more than 200 hours of service. In addition to my college and community involvement, I have made advances in my future career to be a healthcare administrator by being selected to participate in the Community Partners Internship through Hospital Corporation of America. The Boys & Girls Club Organization follows the Youth Development Strategy. This strategy describes how the impact of youth development professionals and volunteers interact with young people. All programs that are implemented purposes are to maximize opportunities and assist with the young people attaining the five basic senses; a sense of competence, a sense of usefulness, a sense of belonging, a sense of power and influence. The programs that the Boys & Girls Club offer to assist with the members of the club acquiring the five senses are Manhood, Smart Girls, Smart Moves, Triple Play Program, and Net Smartz.
I initially signed up for Seton High School’s Tri-Health Summer Job Program during my freshman year. I viewed this eight-week, paid mentorship at the hospital as a great way to make a little money before college. I didn’t realize that this program would change my life forever. That first summer, I worked in the logistics department. I expected this assignment to be very mundane and boring, but it was anything but that.
These internships helped me get an inside perspective of how nurses go above and beyond their everyday duties to ensure patient care, setting a standard for me to go above and beyond in terms of my education, my service to others, and in life. With the changes in college tuition having increased and state support for college students having taken a decrease over the last couple of years, this scholarship would benefit me tremendously in my goals to continue my education.
I am writing to express my interest in and enthusiasm for a summer internship through Nationwide Children’s Hospital. Currently, I am a college senior obtaining a Bachelors of Science in Health Services Administration. As part of the education requirements, I am expected to intern 400 hours through the organization of my choice. I have been drawn to Nationwide Children’s Hospital for your local and national recognition of quality care as well as for a challenging but rewarding internship. Reviewing the Foundations Department Services Intern requirements and qualifications, I find that I would be a great fit.
I began volunteering at my town 's nursing home in high school. Initially, I volunteered as an arts and craft aide, coloring and drawing with the patients, but soon after my sister I transformed that time slot into a performance hour, doing our gymnastics, hip-hop, ppm, cheer, and kickline routines for the patients. It was very rewarding to see the patients smile in amazement and awe and also knowing that they looked forward to seeing me each weekend. At the same it was sad to see familiar faces disappear. After I acquired Home Health Aide certificate in the summer of 2013, I was able to help physically care for the patients.
In this unit, I learned how communication and marketing health promotion needs to be target to the specific audience to have a substantial outcome. Thorough assessment about the community and audience is required before finding the proper communication tools and marketing for health promotion. For example, communication about disaster preparedness would be different between young adults versus an older population. Communication and marketing about disaster to younger adults would be effective through social media (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.). However, for older adults, other sources of communication for disaster preparedness would be needed because less older adults utilize social media.
I was eager and enthusiastic when I first walked In into Schervier Nursing Center, the place where I would be doing volunteer work for the summer. Before that, I had never been In a care center for elderly residents, so I didn't really know what to expect. “You will be assigned to the fourth flour on the north side.” Every volunteer was assigned to a different area. As I arrived to my floor I examined the white halls that would lead me to my destination.
I joined and participated in health promotion program offered at the University of Texas at San Antonio. It was named UTSA’S Rowdy Wellness Health Fair. It occurred today Wednesday, November 9th from 10am – 2pm located in the Sombrilla. The purpose of this program was to promote health and wellness to UTSA community.
The nursing theory I chose that frames my topic of the NIH Fire Work weight loss research study offered at the clinic is Nola Pender health promotion model. I chose this specific theory as the major concept is directly linked to the Fire Work weight loss research. This concept is that health promotion is a behavior motivated by the desire to increase well-being and actualize human health potential; it is an approach to wellness (Gonzalo, 2011). The first specific point of this theory that support my practicum project is that it focuses on health promotion and disease prevention making it stand out from other nursing theories (Current Nursing, 2011). I have chosen public health as my major because it is a dynamic field. I have a passion for making a difference in people’s lives and helping others achieve their goals. It is with great passion that I am dedicated and willing to contribute my service or skills to help someone in need. My philosophy of health education is very simple, to prevent, improve and educate the lives of individuals, families, communities, populations, and societies. Besides, there is no safer way to touch people’s lives than through public health.
