My reaction to these chapters I was very shocked to see the King and the Duke are complete frauds. I didn’t think they would work over towns the way they did. Jim refers to the two as “Rapscallions.” I totally agree with that label, based on how they do things. The King and the Duke seem to be doing what they have always been doing, which is working people over. They make people pay for shows that are not quality. This is what Huck knew was happening, I assume. I hope Jim and Huck can get rid of the two soon. I didn’t think Huck was correct about his assumption. However, he was correct and their outrageous acts surprised me. Therefore, I am shocked to see how horrible the King and the Duke really are. Theme The theme of these chapters is “trust your gut.” The reason I say this is because Huck knew the King and the Duke were frauds. When Huck picked them up they were coming fresh off a recent scam. Huck knew the two were no good, but he went on with helping them anyway. It seems to me the King and the Duke are only trouble for Huck. I assume in future chapters they will cause havoc and slow down Huck and Jim on their journey. If Huck hadn’t picked the two up they could have gained hundreds of miles, and possibly be free already. Going into detail about the two is very easy, because they have so many things wrong with them. For starters, I am going to introduce the “King”. He is old, and he looks about 70 or so. The other man is the “Duke”. The Duke is middle aged, possibly 30. Individually, these two don’t seem to bad. In Fact they seem like normal people However, together they are horrendous. Their lies, poor work and stealing is horrible, and they continue doing it. They make money off shows they put on, however these shows are not good at all. The two are no good, and I do not care for them at
