English Class Reflection

In this short paper, I cover reflection on one of my English classes. The textbook for this class was “Interchange Intro” by Jack C. Richards and the students were elementary level. All of the students were present (14 students). I planned to create a fun and lively atmosphere in the classroom. Therefore, in today’s lesson main focus of learning is just based on games. Richards (2005) suggested “games provide stimulating ways to practice a variety of skills, including vocabulary, grammar, speaking, and listening. Classic and innovative games, such as Twenty Questions, Hot Potato, and Change Chairs, add enjoyment to learning. Depending on teacher’s goals, games can be used as a warm-up, as additional practice, or as a review”. I chose two …show more content…

I planned two new tasks to encourage the students and increased their motivation to the class and especially the game. I believed that these tasks could create a variation and also change the atmosphere in the class. In the first task, I wrote famous people’s names on pieces of paper (one name per paper, one paper per student). Then, I attached the papers to the students’ backs. I asked the students to go around the room and ask yes/no questions to guess the name (e.g., “Am I a man?”). It seems that all students interested in this task. I turned to the next task, I asked the students to use this game to practice present tense, past tense, or infinitives and gerunds. But they showed no interest in doing the task. Hence, I told them to do this task as a homework for the next session. Furthermore, I explain the second game (Mime) and asked the students work in groups of four. Then, I gave each group a set of cards. Afterwards, I explained the rules. One student in each group chose a card and mimed the activity (e.g., wash your hair, watch a comedy on TV). The first student to guess the activity correctly kept the card and chose the next one. The students continued until they used all the cards. The student with the most cards wins.
