Reflection On My Writing

1. Throughout my experience in college, this is my first completely focused writing class. I took quite a lot of various English and Literature classes, but not one dedicated to only writing. Despite this notion, I believe that my writing skills are fairly adequate, though it depends on the type of writing I am tasked to complete. I feel I am really strong at writing that exemplifies strong visual imagery and minute detail. I also like to believe that I am able to write fairly clearly and concisely if given and sufficient time to rewrite. However, papers in which I have to argue or persuade a reader of something is not my strong suite. In my writing I tend to continuously rephrase previously stated ideas and repeating certain words too often.

I learned that in simple terms, Rhetoric is the art of persuasion and how anything influences someone. In Rhetoric clarity is important, as you cannot persuade someone if you aren’t clear or consider the overall effect. Rhetoric is something that is always there, as you are never not in a rhetorical situation. That being, you are always already persuading somebody of something somehow. Rhetoric was once an important topic of study until the last century, where the field has slowly been abandoned by the minds of society and academia alike. There are five parts within the study of rhetoric, those being invention, arrangement, style, memory, and delivery. Invention is the process of coming up with all that there is to say about a given topic. Arrangement is organizing the information that was just invented and in what order. Style is how you convey it all; rather it be your vocabulary, how much information, metaphors, similes, and just how you adjust your language affects your impact on someone.
