As part of HLBM502 we were required as a group to develop a creative presentation in any manner we as a group chose identifying and demonstrating what the impact of culture has on the way we as professionals communicate in therapeutic environments. This essay will discuss my role in the presentation, identifying and discussing communication issues that may have influenced the group process. Further this essay will discuss and reflect on how this experience influenced my communication as a student midwife. My group chose to act out a skit on what we called the good and bad midwife. New knowledge was shared and explained to ensure full understanding for all group members. As a group we worked well together in resolving timetable conflictions due to study and work commitments. All members took on equal roles and workloads and brought their own individual strengths that built what I considered a strong supportive reliable group. Clark (2009) advises that learning to work effectively within a group is essential to ensure tasks, such as planning, are completed. It is the cooperation and teamwork of the group that is especially important. Firstly group work affords an opportunity for stronger support to be given while viewing how positive or negative feedback is given or received. Secondly group work enables a pooling of resources to assist with solutions to arising problems. Thirdly it allows members to support each other knowing the same fears and anxieties are shared and allows a more efficient use of each member’s time (p. 3-4).
