I took on a leadership role in the group. This included setting up the initial Facebook group page, organising first group meeting, and formulating a structured project plan including roles and responsibilities, collaboration tools to be used, timelines and milestones, and group expectations. As I had strong experience in PR campaigns, I was also instrumental in our pitch following elements of a strategic PR plan including introduction, high level pitch, situational analysis, goals and objectives, target publics, key messages, tactics, timelines, evaluation, and conclusion. Additionally, I had a one-on-one conversation with each team member, to ensure all were all on the same page. Each group member was aligned to responsibility according to interest. I was assigned introduction, pitch, and situational analysis. I enjoy the initial research elements that such situational analysis involves. Group members must overcome not being in the same vicinity, and not having the same immediacy, spontaneity, body language and context that face to face group work provides. Indeed, I was overseas for a part of this project, so time differences were a factor also. In today’s globalised business environment, PR practitioners would have similar challenges, having to collaborate with colleagues over vast geographies and different time zones. We overcame these challenges by utilising all available online collaboration tools available such as Facebook, Messenger, Google Docs, PowerPoint Online and Skype.
