Writing 101 is the first college course I have ever taken. I was not accustomed to the format writing assignments required, nor was I prepared for the higher skill level of writing that would be mandatory. Of course, I didn’t let these potential setbacks discourage me. I diligently worked on papers and thoroughly read all course materials to ensure I had a complete understanding of the new information. When I began Writing 101 I had a meager amount of writing skills; now I’m more proficient in my writing and I’m confident it will help me in my future.

However, making sure your ideas flow well is harder than I had anticipated. Before I started this class, I would generally place my thesis statement as the first sentence of my introduction. I had no idea that what I was doing was extremely frowned upon as a writing technique. I also had weak topic sentences for my paragraphs and absolutely no flow or organization throughout my papers. Confirming a paper flowed well was something new to me. Practicing with pronouns, commas, run on-sentences, fragment sentences, and parallel structure were all enormously helpful to begin being mindful on how my essay was flowing. This class assisted me tremendously with the organization of my papers. Each paper gradually became more organized. My thesis placement was more logical, my topic sentences more focused and my conclusion paragraph more complete and coherent. Something that I learned from the writing assignments was that it was easier for me to generate the body paragraphs first, and then form a thesis that intertwined all the points I had discussed afterwards. Creating a well-organized paper is still a challenge I face, but a much less frightening and discouraging
