As a college student it is important that one possess the skills to read critically and write well. At California State University, East Bay, all students are required to complete and pass a writing skills exam that demonstrates their ability to read and write critically. However, each student has the opportunity to complete this requirement by either taking the writing skills exam or completing a writing course (English 3000). As a student at CSUEB, I have chosen to complete the ENGL 3000 course and present a portfolio of essay’s to the testing department to assure myself a passing score for this requirement. I believe that through this course I have acquired all the necessary skills to be a proficient and competent reader and writer. After reflecting on the work I have completed this quarter, I believe that I should pass this course for several reasons. I was able to understand the concepts presented in the course, I created well written essays, and I completed all assignments that were required of me. The reason I was able to write excellent essays was because I applied the concepts that were taught throughout the course, I developed all my ideas with supporting evidence, and I focused on the structure of each essay. For example, for the Position essay I made sure that I incorporated a refutation and a concession paragraph to show readers different viewpoints. I also supported my ideas with evidence provided in the readings. In addition, to focusing on the concepts and audience, I paid close attention to my essay structure and how it would flow for the reader. This can be seen in my compare and contrast essay where I used a Pattern A set up to compare the readings between two writers about single-sex classrooms in schools. Each of these techniques helped me to write good essays that would be acceptable to present to the testing
