Reflective Essay: Hair Study

I have been going to the same hair salon for years. Although I know the women that work there, and in turn they know me, I have never had one conversation with them about anything besides how I would prefer my hair to be cut. I would avoid “small talk” at all costs, and I would use my cell phone as a shield, to hide behind. However, that was until I attended a civility panel at the northeast campus of Community College of Philadelphia. The individuals at this panel, Kathy Mullright, Tosh Trailer, Blendina Hack, and Corine Carmathy, caused me to realize that being friendly, by putting down my cellphone, saying hello, creating conversation, or even something so small as making eye contact causes me no harm. During the civility panel, Mullright, Trailer, Heck, and Carmathy addressed two major issues our society faces, especially the city of Philadelphia, and solutions to correct the issues. This discussion was lead with an anecdote from Corine Carmathy. She stated that her and, her friends were in a community study room preparing for an exam, when another group of students came in the quiet room abruptly, and rude. In fact, Carmathy 's study group had no other choice but to leave because the other students were noisy, and playing music, and her study group could not concentrate in those conditions. In short, the second group of students were inconsiderate, and disrespectful to Carmathy, and the group. Many Philadelphians, like the second group of students, struggle with respecting others. The utter disrespect in Philadelphia can be found in many different ways. For example, it is not uncommon to see dog feces that was left on someone 's grass because the dog owner was to lazy to pick up; furthermore, it is also very common to be in a public setting, such as on the bus or in the grocery store, and someone is having a conversation on speaker
