Before college, in all honesty, I detested research. I was always intrigued by the various facts that I discovered through research, however, the actual process always seemed tedious to me. I believe in field experience, but as Conflict Analysis and Resolution majors, we learn that research is essential in every conflict we, as practitioners, will engage in. After freshmen year, I quickly learned to love researching. Honors 110 was not a difficult experience for me as I had recently completed a larger research project my senior year of high school. In my second semester, I did a wider variety of informal research regarding police brutality and conflicts in the Middle East. Now, my concentration in Conflict Analysis and Resolution is focused on community and organizational conflicts. Last semester, in my Conflict 301 class, I designed a research project that would executed in Conflict 490. This class required me to create a research proposal throughout the entire semester that detailed background context, a literature review, and methods design. The project I designed was a quantitative comparative analysis of the number of police brutality cases throughout the decades. I hypothesized that police brutality has been a relatively consistent act and only now, due to media present, the public is more aware. I cannot wait to execute this project in my capstone conflict class and present at the Undergraduate Research Symposium next fall. This semester, for my Conflict 399 class, I will be researching how to develop conflict curriculum for an elementary education level. Research is essential here, because I must identify what kinds of curriculum have previously been created and how I could either strengthen that curriculum or rework it all together.
