Reflective Essay: The Power Of My Own Lens

I believe in the power that the past holds over people. People are influenced by their own personal experiences, their beliefs, and the people around them. I believe that these things create a lens, or filter that people view the world through. In this essay, I’m going to take up some of your time and tell you about my own lens, and how I think it’s possible to change, or even create a whole new lens for yourself. This belief has been formed by many things for me. I’d say my first realization of this fact goes back to my first three years in summer camp. He’d completely changed. We actually ended up being pretty good friends that year. This was the first event in my life that really showed me the power of change. It showed me that people can change. And that they’re changing all the time. This belief stuck with me up until now, and this year in my history class it’s been reinforced. I found out last semester that I had a big passion for history. My favorite thing about all of it is the way things affect other things, and the way things change. One of the main themes I encounter in the class though, is the connection to the modern day, and you’d be surprised how many connections you can make with the world a thousand years ago, and the world now. This idea also goes for the opposite. You’d be just as surprised how much the world has changed (not quite where I’d like this part. Changing this eventually). This really helped me in understanding the idea of the ongoing, and constant change that the world is going through. That can also be extended to people. It’s a common saying that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it. This applies to all walks of life. If people don’t understand the lens they see the world through, then they don’t have the power to change it. But if people become more aware of themselves, then they can change anything about
