Advocacy for vulnerable populations such as individuals battling mental health issues, minorities, women, and at-risk youth has been central to my life. Having overcome issues relating to poverty, immigration, and mental health has enlightened me to the paradoxical nature of law. That is, the law has been the source of insight and eloquence on equality while also inequality and outright discrimination within the own profession. My personal struggles have acted as a catalyst to further my work with individuals from different cultural, religious and socioeconomic backgrounds. I used my role in the “Only Yes Means Yes” campaign with Women's Legal Education and Action Fund to advocate for substantive equality rights for women and girls. Furthering protection and rights for the vulnerable populations by the way of research, collaborative partnerships, and innovative programming has been the hallmark of my experience at Windsor Law, and I wish to mimic and extend this to Ottawa Law upon transferring. This coupled with the school’s internationally renowned Human Rights Research and Education Centre would provide an environment that’s conducive to exploring all that law has to offer. I look forward to utilizing the volunteering opportunities to help enrich the community and campus while acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge to uphold the rule of law.
