The United States was a growing, prosperous nation in the 1800’s. They were the shining example of democracy and freedom for citizens. As people watched the US grow, they wanted to be a part of a great country. The first time I arrived to this nation, I landed at the city of New York, where countless of immigrants, like me, once entered, what was and is known as, the land of opportunity. I’ve come to think that Ellis Island, the gateway to millions of immigrants to the United States, has remained in tact over the years to remind us that this nation was built and made what it is today by immigrants. The hurdles of being new to this nation approached life in different colors, forms and shapes. My English was undoubtedly limited and the few words that I could grasp did not allowed me to even sustain a conversation based on simplistic small talk.
My family has always been the center of my universe. They’ve taught me the importance of being united and taking care of one another—because in the end, all we truly have is each other. My parents have raised me to be a good daughter, sister, and citizen. They’ve shaped me to be respectful, responsible, and virtuous, knowing these values will last a lifetime. But above all, my parents have instilled in me an appreciation and eagerness for education.
Immigration in the past few decades have grown within the world as many are fleeing their own countries for others, by both legal and illegal means. However, with such a large influx of immigrants, this has put a notable strain on the receiving countries. Thus raising the question of what can be done and what to do with those who have illegally entered the country. In the United States the issue of illegal immigration and immigrants has progressively worsened, splitting the citizen’s opinion between either allowing them to stay or deporting every illegal within the country. On November 20, 2014 President Obama gave a speech to answer such questions with his immigration reform.
When I came to this country, unlike others, my family had no experience with how things worked here. Which meant whatever I learned here, was just a new to them as it was to me. My education became more about encountering and trying new things than about succeeding. Because you can succeed if you don’t know how things worked around here. From the moment, I set foot in this country, I knew no one will ever give me anything on a silver platter.
An immigrant family wants the best for everyone lives, however moving to a new country brings struggles. There struggles include finding a home, a good paying job, avoiding to be deported, being separated ,and continuing their education. Immigrants expect a better life because their old home and country did have much benefits as the new country gives them. The advantage of an immigrant family is family values which tends them to be closer. Disadvantages of an immigrant family are the struggles that were first mentioned and including that they face other people calling them a threat.
This program membership will open new doors for me and make my high school and college experiences so much smoother. I think I will really benefit from having the college courses intermixed with my high school classes because I will be learning higher level information along with the high school work to challenge myself in Montco while having time in Pottstown High School to work on my electives. Ten years ago, I immigrated to the United States and ever since I have been an undocumented immigrant. Due to my legal status in the United States, I felt like I was restricted from certain situations and possessions and would never be able to succeed. I was not living the normal life of a seven-year-old. Instead, I had to learn to cope and adapt to a whole new culture. Even though the drastic change at such a young age was a challenge, it has shaped who I am today.
It has impacted me in a great way in skills such as optimism, confidence, creativity, commitment in each assignment, among other benefits. I have used the activities I have learned in the program in other extracurricular activities such as after-school clubs. In the different outreach with the freshmen. A refugee is a person who has been forced to leave their home country in order to escape war, persecution, or natural disaster. There are many different types of refugees, these include refugees who are escaping war, social discrimination, racial discrimination, religious persecution, those who are seeking aid after a natural disaster, political unrest, and those who fear for their lives and the lives of their family. These people are given refugee status and are placed in designated refugee camps across the country where they are supposed to be cared for and educated, but this is not happening. Many of the countries only provide shelter for the refugees but do not provide the rest of the basic needs. There are many factors that contribute to a person becoming a refugee these include war, famine, racial prejudice, religion, harassment or torture due to political views, nationality, and natural disaster.
