The Reign of Terror was a terrible time period, it was a very historical time. The Reign of Terror began after the execution of Louis XVI, led by Maximillien de Robespierre. The new government killed thousands of people that were considered enemies of the revolution. There was war started inside and outside of France. How was the Reign of Terror not justified? The Reign of Terror was not justified, because the external threats did not require as much attention, the internal threats were not that big of a problem, and the methods used were too extreme. The external threats during the Reign of Terror did not require as much attention. In 1793, the revolutionary campaign was launched against the Catholic Church. Levee en masse was a military draft that abolished Christianity in France. The Vendee rebellion was counterrevolutionary. In the Vendee rebellion between 80,000 and 500,000 people died. In October of 1793, in Lyons, revolutionaries destroyed 1600 homes and chopped off twelve heads in five minutes. (Doc. C) Levee en masse is unjust, because it requires people to do things they do not want to do. Government was supposed to value freedom and liberty, but they restricted religious practice. Counterrevolutionary activity has been increasing and the National Convention got a letter by the government in western France. The government was asking for help to stop the “rabble.” (Doc.
